As a former 19 year old girl who really really really wanted to be a pilot, but comes from a poor family, this honestly is impossible to do as a civilian. It’s just so insanely expensive to pay an instructor, rent the plane, pay for flight costs, fuel etc, unless your parents can front the cost or you own your own plane. She has a commercial certificate, not private. You can't get paid if you only have a private. The progression is private - commercial - airline transport pilot. Your commercial license numbers are way off! Helis are way more expensive than typical small aircrafts. After your PPL you need an additional 210 hours. Where I’m from you can’t find a help to rent under $200. Most are $300-$400 an hour. So you’re looking at $40k-$80k for a Heli CPL. And unless we know this pilot personally, we shouldn't be guessing about how she financed flight training. If we do know her personally, we shouldn't be telling. Actually the Blain family are pretty cool. I don't think they're obscenely wealthy. Modest background and worked hard to build the business. They do a lot of work gratis. Yeah but flying helicopters in the army requires much more training than flying helicopters for the State of California. You have to be an Officer to fly in the military, so of course there’s a lot of training and commanding and experience that comes with the title. I grew up with them. Yeah this is incredible. When I was young and stupid I looked into flying helicopters in the Army. It's an 8 year commitment to become a warrant officer and get to flying without a college degree. It's honestly unreal this girl is 19 and flying Chinooks. To be clear, on day one of flying school in the army they most certainly don't put you in a twin rotor aircraft. Our CAS jump was a woman when I was civi deployed with the DoD, god was she good. Can confirm. I was a rafting guide on class IV and V water in Colorado with a company back in the 90's. In initial training the guy guides would muscle their way down the rivers. The girls, knowing most of them couldn't match the strength, would learn to read the currents and have cleaner runs. I lived in Canada until I was twenty. At least in Ontario, when you turn 16, you become eligible for your G1 (learners permit). After 12 months, you can get your G2; this allows you to drive alone, but not between certain hours and not with more than 2 passengers under the age of 18 I believe. 12 months later, you take another driving test and get your G (full license). I think of it this way, we like to think of ourselves as being an advanced civilization; a 1st world country. But, the truth is, we're barely out of the dark ages.
