I think of it this way, we like to think of ourselves as being an advanced civilization; a 1st world country. But, the truth is, we're barely out of the dark ages. The kids in this photo are probably in their 60s-70s. They can remember a time without electricity and indoor plumbing. This wasn't a one-off family having fallen on hard times. This was entire communities. We're not even a generation away from that kind of hardship. That puts things into perspective for me. People talk like they just can't believe we're still dealing with problems like poverty and racism. Laws can't wipe away the experience of living like how it was in that photo. Just like they can't wipe away the memories of when black people weren't allowed at the front of a bus.

I tried very hard to understand these Trump supporters. There are many hypotheses, but many of them are either untested, or their predictions turned out wrong, or their predictions apply to only a small subset of Republican voters (Trump supporters are about 80-90% of Republican voters.)
